Because most window panes are taller than they are wide, and a portrait screen fills one the way a poster would. It also leaves the rest of the window for product. The board is designed in portrait, so the text sits in one readable column rather than a wide layout squeezed into a tall frame. ### How big should the text be for a window screen? A common sign-trade rule of thumb is about one inch of letter height for every ten feet of viewing distance, and bigger reads faster. Measure from the pavement, not from inside the shop.
