## What is chai wala digital signage?

Chai wala digital signage is a tea stall menu board that runs on an ordinary TV instead of a painted or printed sign. The screen is stood on its end, portrait, and lists chai varieties, snacks and prices. Prices are edited from a phone, so a rate change takes seconds rather than a new board.

A chai stall or tapri owner runs this portrait board, showing cutting chai, masala chai and snack prices.

## Frequently asked questions

### What are the 7 types of menus?

The food trade usually counts a la carte, table d'hote (a fixed set price), du jour (today only), cycle, static, beverage and dessert menus. A chai stall runs two of them at once: a static beverage menu for the chai and coffee that never changes, and a du jour list for whatever is fried fresh that morning. Split your board the same way. Put the permanent drinks in the top two thirds, where a queue reads first, and keep one clearly marked block at the bottom for the day's snacks, so a sold out samosa is a one line edit rather than a reprint. Hold the whole board to about nine lines. Past that, people stop reading and just ask you.

### How can I create a menu board?

Work backwards from the distance people read it from. The sign trade sizes type at roughly 25mm of capital letter height for every 3 metres of viewing distance, so a queue that starts 6 metres back needs capitals close to 50mm tall on the finished screen. Pick the orientation next. A footpath stall reads better portrait, because a tall narrow board sits above heads and matches the shape of a queue. Then cut the list. Group drinks and snacks into two blocks, put every price in one right hand column so the eye can scan straight down it, and keep the whole thing on a single screen. If it needs a second slide, it is too long.

### How to set up a tea stall?

Three things settle it before the stove goes on: the pitch, the paperwork and the cost per cup. Any food business in India needs an FSSAI registration or licence, and the certificate has to be displayed where customers can see it, so start that first because it gates everything else. Ask your local municipal body about a vending or trade licence for the spot, since footpath rules are set locally, not nationally. Then work out your cost per cup honestly: one full day of milk, tea, sugar, gas and cups, divided by the cups you actually sold rather than the cups you hoped for. Price off that number. Decide your rate board before you open, because a stall with no visible price list gets asked the price all day.

### What food is typically on a tea house menu?

A roadside stall keeps drinks first and food second. Drinks are usually cutting chai and full chai, masala chai, adrak or elaichi chai, plain black tea, and often filter or instant coffee, plus one cold option in summer. Food is whatever holds for a few hours beside a hot stove: biscuits and rusk, khari, samosa, vada pav, poha, bun maska, bread pakoda, and maggi or eggs if you have a second burner. Nine or ten lines covers almost every stall. Anything selling fewer than about five plates a day is taking a line on the board and earning nothing, so drop it and give that space to a size or a price you actually want noticed.

## How to use it

1. Open https://channelos.tv/t/chai-wala-9c102a95-0737-44fc-85fa-64c792822dc4 and press "Use this template". Create a free account and the template opens in your own workspace.
2. Change the words, prices and photos in the editor, from a phone or a computer.
3. On the TV, open play.channelos.tv in its own browser, pair it from your phone with the code it shows, then publish the board to it.

It runs in the television's own web browser. There is no media player box to buy and
nothing to install. The first screen is free. Free screens show a ChannelOS banner
along the bottom of the screen. Any paid plan removes it.
